Meet Rickey Joseph Claxton, also known by his stage name Yung Rico Chillz. He is a 27 year old independent artist hailing from Omaha, Nebraska.
He developed an obsession for music at a very early age. At just the age of 3, he began to take interest. The first album he remembers listening to is titled “All eyes on me”. He would participate in school talent shows to show off his musical skill. He would do freestyles over various instrumentals, an example being over The Lox’s “Money Power Respect”
Rico is a versatile artist with many different styles. He would classify his style as under “wordsmith” or “bar monger”. His music type is high energy and narcissistic. He uses flows that can best match with the tone of his song. Another way he describes his music is by translating the beat into lyrics.
Rico’s most successful track is titled “God mode”, produced by another Omaha artist called RTB. He mentioned that he feels it to be the most original track in his album. The track has high energy with significant lyrics. Every lyric carries it’s own meaning and values. The song represents Yung Rico’s mindset and personality.
Rico is heavily influenced by West Coast rap. During his early life he looked up to Tupac and Eminem, due to the impact they had and strong wordplay. Some other notable artists he had brought up were Tech N9ne, Andre 3000, and Kanye West. Rico also mentioned the idea of audio art, which he described as “Listening to a painting or picture, sometimes it takes me a few listens before I get the full picture”.
Originally Rico had started off in musical groups. Eventually be broke off to be on his own, dropping his first solo mixtape titled “Son of a Pimp”. Shortly afterwards he moved forward with releasing two more mixtapes, titled “OLord” and “Son of a Pimp 2”. He felt that he hadn’t gotten enough credit for these releases, leading to him releasing another project last year titled “Image”, which is now listed on Apple Music and Spotify. He described Image as a statement album, proving that he deserves credit as an artist.
Some other hobbies he has consist of Anime, Dragon ball Z, Pokemon, skateboarding, snowboarding, and basketball. He plays 2K on Playstation, and participates in dance and acting. He is well rounded being involved in lots of different things, not just limited to music. He holds pride in being a resident at Omaha, Nebraska. He mentioned that the city helped inspire him, as there is lots of talent to be found there. We will be seeing a lot more from Yung Rico Chillz in the future.
